San Francisco School of Fly Fishing offers private individual, as well as small and large group casting instruction for skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Students can bring their own equipment or use the rods, lines and reels provided by the School. Lessons are held all over the San Francisco Bay Area.
As Head Casting Instructor, Willy George, notes “A private fly casting lesson, similar to a golf or tennis lesson, will help you become a better caster and fly fisher – whether your goal is to learn the basic casting stroke or to double haul for distance. These lessons can be customized to meet your needs.”
Students can help to write their own lesson plan. For example, fly fishers heading to a new destination requiring a different casting or fishing technique, often book a casting lesson to perfect the required skills before heading out. The expensive and time-wasting alternative, of course, is to pay their guide to help them attain casting proficiency on-the-water instead of focusing their efforts on “hunting” their target species.
Students should bring the following gear:
- Glasses* (clear and sun), jacket (incl. rain gear), hat or visor, sun screen, water, pen and note card to take notes
- Rods & reels of your choice w/ floating lines (unless we are working on sinking lines)
- Leaders: Rig lines with 6 – 8 foot tapered leaders (nothing smaller than 4x) and a yarn fly
- Loaner rods available – please notify the instructor when you make your appointment
